February 23 – Defender of the Fatherland Day.
For the first time this holiday was celebrated in country scales in the USSR in 1923. Originally the holiday carried the name "Day of Red Army and Fleet", and from 1946 to 1993 it was called "Day of the Soviet Army and Navy". In modern Russia it is a public holiday - "Defender of the Fatherland Day".
Across all country official events take place: wreath-laying on mass graves and to an eternal flame, rewardings, concert programs. And not officially, this holiday is considered to be a “man’s day” among Russian people, because all male persons and also female who have chosen military specialty are liable for call-up in Russia and are treated as defenders of the fatherland therefore. All honors and gifts are dedicated to a strong half of mankind this day.
